MAHYTEC moves to the industrial stage

News - 6 April 2016

MAHYTEC is established in its new premises since December 2015. Last arrived in the company in March is a new machine of filament winding. This new production tool aims to accompany the industrialization stage of MAHYTEC compressed hydrogen tanks.

Filament winding is a technology for the manufacturing of composite materials at high performance. It allows reinforcing mechanically a polymer or metallic liner (which ensures the sealing of the gas) by winding around fibers that are impregnated with resin, that is for example composites out of carbon/epoxy. This optimization of the reinforcement enables to withstand to higher pressure. With resistance to pressure comes a higher capacity to compress and therefore a larger volume of stored gas. This is one of the key of hydrogen, the lightest gas.

MAHYTEC was until then equipped with a filament winding machine with a single spindle. This new machine has 3 spindles which makes it possible to manufacture three tanks at the same time. MAHYTEC increases significantly its production capabilities.

The complete system is supplied with a tensioning system up to 18 spools which guaranty the holding of the fiber before winding, a resin bath for the impregnation of the fibers and a multi-directional distribution system. The whole set occupies a surface area of 50sqm and weights about 14 tonnes.

Today, this machine can manufacture structures up to 3.5m long and 60cm diameter. This new tool will produce MAHYTEC hydrogen tanks 300liters-525bar for the hydrogen filling stations and gas transportation. Hydrogen storage systems for mobility, composite tanks where hydrogen is compressed at 700bar, will also be manufactured on this machinery.
